Wolverines / The Sibling Project
Self-Released Split CD

Splits like this one are great.

I’m sick and tired of hearing splits and compilations of bands that sound similar. What’s the point really? If you want two entirely different flavors, you don’t want two flavors of strawberry. Two duo groups, Wolverines and The Sibling Project couldn’t sound any more different from each other…making for the ideal split in my opinion.

Wolverines play raw, screamy rock similar to Off Minor and Saetia, but not as tight. With one guitar and a drum kit, Wolverines’ sound is thin and bony, however it’s far from soft. The rhythms are razor-sharp and the guitar feels strummed and plucked with a shard of glass. Their five songs twist and entwine, becoming knotty and complex like the branches on a gnarled and misshapen tree. Wolverines’ spiky discharge is balanced by forceful yells from both members…shouts of desperation that I embrace full heartedly.

The Sibling Project (Lindsey and Danny Ranck) play some bubbly electro-dance ditties. Mates of State definitely come to mind, especially when Lindsey and Danny both share in on the vocal duties. Soft, calming, and bouncy, The Sibling Project’s cooling fusion of acoustic guitar and electronics will calm your nerves and make you smile. It’s hard not to like the group, no matter how joyous they sound. The Sibling Project definitely will beep-boop their way into your heart, especially after the punishment of the Wolverines’ ear-splitting output.

If I was forced to take one side, the rough claw of the Wolverines or the soft embrace of The Sibling Project, I’ll tightly grip the Wolverines’. But both groups from Raleigh, North Carolina are worth checking out. I hope more splits take this approach.
