Weerd Science
Friends and Nervous Breakdowns
Equal Vision / Super Rap CD
So what are the key ingredients when it comes to a solid hip hop/rap release? You got it, a tight lyrical delivery and superior beats. Friends and Nervous Breakdowns fortunately contains both.
Equal Vision definitely caught me off guard with Weerd Science's Friends and Nervous Breakdowns. Weerd Science is the brainchild of drummer Josh Eppard of Coheed and Cambria, along with friends Kwame Wiafe Akenten Jr., Danny Illchuck, and Dave Parker. Without doubt Josh's drumming skills and experience really helped out in creating head-bobbing, entrancing beats on Friends and Nervous Breakdowns. If he wasn't drumming for the amazing Coheed full-time, I wouldn't have any disbelieve that he can make a living creating beats and tracks for not just himself, but for more well know artists out there (and believe me, some of those rappers can use some top-quality beats to enhance their rhymes).
The vocals spit and roll off the tongue in an adamant, rapid-fire style that has a slight sore-throat, raspy-esque quality. The words launch out one after another without any hesitation or pause. Josh definitely has rhyming skill. Cynical or serious, the witty lyrics grab the listener's attention track after track, word after word: "Girl I have to tell you something / If you're really knocked up by my homie I'm going to punch you in the stomach."*
If my mind isn't playing tricks on me, Friends and Nervous Breakdowns is one of the best rap attacks I've heard since Dead Prez's RGB: Revolutionary But Gangsta. There are only a few tracks that drag ("Blueprint" and "Super Friends"), but overall, Weerd Science offers up a refreshing rap release with interesting beats and clever lyrics—Weerd Science can clearly hold their own against any outfit out there throwing it down in the rap game.
