.And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead
Worlds Apart
Interscope CD

The opening song "Will You Smile Again for Me" hits away with that spine-chilling guitar-layered rock sound that I've grown to love from the Trail of Dead, but I hate to say, the rest of Worlds Apart didn't hook me in like Source Tags & Codes and their self-titled release did.

"Will you smile again for me? Will you smile again for me? Will you smile again for me?"* I'm sorry, but not this time.

Perhaps I just fear change, but on Worlds Apart, this change...and yes, the Trail of Dead have altered their sound, doesn't seem to flow as well as their previous material. In a way, it's more stripped-down. The layers upon layers of electrifying guitars are missed (except on "Will You Smile Again for Me" and "Classic Art Showcases," among moments here and there), and the slithering guitar-swaying build-ups are few and far between. Tracks like "Worlds Apart," "The Best," "All White," and "And the Rest Will Follow" are peppered with piano and vocals that are set more in the foreground.

"Will You Smile Again for Me," "Let It Dive," and "Classic Art Showcases" are the songs that contain that swirling brightness that I loved so much of earlier Trail of Dead. I do give credit for the Trail of Dead's complacent progressiveness, but it's just not as emotionally responsive as what I felt from them in the past. Just a warning to old fans, this is a new Trail of Dead. Maybe I just need more time to soak Worlds Apart in, but for now, it's not an album I enjoy listening to.
