Thistle
Tired Anchor
Tiberius CD
Now this is indie-rock to get excited about.
I simply love the guitar sound on Tired Anchor. A little fuzzed out, and with every strum of every string, electrifying notes sting and fizzle and spray outwards, sparking a warm sensual tingling. Most of the tracks are moderately paced, melodic, slightly jangly, and always engaging, evoking a sense of comfort.
Often times Cincinnati's Thistle resonates with familiarity akin to slower Superchunk, Seam (especially on "And We're Ghost" and "Arched or Bent, Every Cell Gave In"), Polvo, and a few guitar picks remind me of the playfulness of The Jazz June ("Apron Springs"), but overall it definitely contains a rich early 90s vibe that I love full heartedly.
Thistle have been going at it for awhile now, since 1994, and I have to say I'm a little agitated that I haven't heard of them earlier. I certainly have been missing out, but I couldn't be more thrilled. Tired Anchor retains an unforgettable sound, one you can't soak in with just one listen. I can almost picture myself back in high school, cooped up in my old bedroom, relaxing on my bed listening to guitar-driven sounds similar to Thistle and reflecting upon the unimportant events of my young teenage life. It's rare that I get excited about new albums nowadays, but Tired Anchor really moved me, and I've been waiting awhile for an album like this, one that embraces and celebrates the beauty of indie-guitar-rock of past, while combining fresh and invigorating ideas into one hell of a gem of an album.
Seam did it to me in the 90s with albums like Are You Driving Me Crazy? and The Problem With Me, and Thistle is rekindling that same excitement with Tired Anchor. Simply breathtaking! There's nothing like the sound of an electrifying guitar to awaken the senses.
