The Belles
Idle Acres
Second Nature CD EP
Idle Acres' lo-fi delivery doesn't numb, but rather electrifies your senses as much as a down-tempo release can. The Lawrence, Kansas duo consisting of ex-members of The Creature Comforts and The New Amsterdams nicely utilize an acoustic guitar, organ, ebow, tambourine, and stripped-down drum kit to methodically play notes that seem to leisurely drift away like a hovering bubble that's desperately trying to delay its inevitable burst.
It's a somnolent release, but don't expect to nod off.
Unhurried and laidback, The Belles' mellow gold is a relaxing listen. Idle Acres contains six tracks, one of those a cover of a sweet Neil Young tune entitled "Birds." It was a nice surprise, but the cover doesn't come close to touching the magic of the original. Still, I give The Belles credit for paying homage to one of my favorite artists. Tracks like "Left Arm Tan," "These Things Will Kill Me," and "Star Witness" are some of Idle Acres stronger and more appealing tracks on the EP, but "Don't Write, Don't Call" and "What We Are" really slows the pace even more with a drowsy low ebb delivery that can be comparable to the likes of The One AM Radio and Best Boy Electric.
Quietly melancholy, Idle Acres exudes warmth. Nothing groundbreaking, but The Belles' beauty and charm offers up an enjoyable listen that won't slip away unnoticed.
