The Morning Of
The World As We Know It
Tragic Hero CD
Normally I'm not into bands like The Morning Of, but considering I've been injecting my ears with a steady diet of Tegan and Sara lately, I'm finding myself warming up to the sounds of The World As We Know It.
So what's this sound I normally don't cuddle up with? Soft piano led melodic pop-rock. It's not that I don't enjoy things extra sugary (heck, I have a three to four cans of Mountain Dew a day habit), it's that I don't normally enjoy my pop this polished and clean (is that an oxymoron?). The one element of The Morning Of's sound that caught my attention is the female/male vocal exchange. A huge fan of Jejune, Rainer Maria, and Mates of State, I always wished more bands would take this vocal approach. It definitely makes for an interesting dynamic.
The World contains an overload of melodies and sweet vocal harmonies, sometimes overdramatic and too syrupy. I was watching some videos of the band with the original lineup and they seemed to have little more of an edge to their sound, and the live output was void of any polished gloss. These kids can definitely sing their hearts out, but I can't help wish for a little rawness in the sound, but "There's A Bully in the Park" and "Pilot to Base" both contain a little extra muscle and some hardcore tendencies which was a sweet surprise. Definitely the standout tracks for me on the release.
The World is cleanly produced chock full of warming melodies and comforting vocals. It's a little too spotless for these ears, but it's still a good release if your ears love to bathe in sweet thorn-less melodies.
