Split Fifty
Swing From Her Fingernails
Masquerade CD

I really enjoyed Split Fifty's last release We Live Forever, however the overproduced radio friendly Swing From Her Fingernails leaves me with mixed emotions.

What happened to the diversity, the dynamic drive, the raw aggressiveness? It's greatly missed on their newest release. Swing From Her Fingernails' production is spotless and the sharp melodies crystalline, especially when it comes to toe-tapping rockers like "Kiss the Corpse," "Lets Dance," and "Playing With Fire." However, clean and polished doesn't always make for a quality listen.

The beats are full of momentum, but they're definitely not fresh. You can hear hints of Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco ("Even the Skeletons Dance for Her"), and Good Charlotte, and that's probably why it's hard for me to keep listening. The one track that held my attention was "Pray For All the Souls That Sin and Fall," but unfortunately one track isn't enough to keep Swing From Her Fingernails spinning in my stereo.

Swing From Her Fingernails was a disappointing listen, especially since I was anxious to hear the band's follow up to We Live Forever. Hopefully next time Split Fifty will bring back that aggressive melodic-rock that made their sound so appealing on their debut. I refuse to turn my back on this Keystone State band, so I'm wishing for the outfit to fall back on their raw beginnings on their next attempt.
