Sick City
Nightlife
Trustkill CD
“For fans of Senses Fail, Story of the Year, and Anberlin.” Well I’m not a fan of any of those bands, and you can go ahead and throw Manitoba’s Sick City in with that group as well.
It’s not that Winnipeg, Canada’s Sick City can’t write a solid song, because they can. It’s that Nightlife doesn’t offer anything you haven’t heard before. The production is crystalline and sharp, the melodies are soft and cushiony, and Josh Youngson’s vocals soar high. “Turning Heads” and “Tora, Tora, My Dear Tora” contains a little spice, but overall Nightlife is a bland sounding release that fails in any creativity.
Even though Sick City is a young group and Nightlife showcases some skills, unfortunately their wishy-washy melodic pop rock charm with hardcore tendencies doesn’t work on these old ears. A glossy sound that’s void of no real substance, Nightlife is generic at best.
