Punk Goes Crunk
Fearless CD Compilation
Punk Goes Crunk is hands down the worst compilation my old battered ears have ever heard.
You would think if any indie-rock outfit can pull off an interesting cover of Ol' Dirty Bastard's "Got Your Money" it would be Say Anything, right? Wrong. Been hungry for a cover of Will Smith's "Men In Black?" or a smooth melodic-pop version of Rihanna's "Umbrella?" I didn't think so.
The one standout track is The Escape Frame's cool laidback version of "Nothing But A 'G' Thang." Everything is whack. Uninspiring covers from mostly uninspiring bands equals heavy doses of pain for your ears. Even if your band was roped in to cover a hip hop song for this compilation, you really want to settle on a cover of Outkast's "Hey Ya," or the Snoop Dogg's "Gin and Juice?" The Devil Wears Prada asked W.W.J.D. and did a heavy metal cut of "Still Fly" by the Big Tymers which was interesting, but I was hoping for some real innovative takes on some classic cuts by rap all-stars like Kurtis Blow, Public Enemy, Run D.M.C., The Geto Boys, and/or KRS-One.
The lineup: Set Your Goals "Put Yo Hood Up (Lil' Jon), Say Anything "Got You Money" (Ol' Dirty Bastard), The Secret Handshake "I Wish" (Skee-Lo), Forever the Sickest Kids "Men In Black" (Will Smith), My American Heart "California Love" (2Pac), The Maine "I Wanna Love You (Akon), Emanuel "Kryptonite" (Purple Ribbon All-Stars), Person L "The Seed 2.1" (The Roots), The Devil Wears Prada "Still Fly" (Big Tymers), All Time Low "Umbrella" (Rihanna), Scary Kids Scaring Kids "Notorious Thugs" (Notorious B.I.G.), The Escape Frame "Nothin' But A "G" Thang" (Dr. Dre), Hot Rod Circuit "Gin and Juice" (Snoop Dogg), Lorene Drive "Hey Ya!" (OutKast), and New Found Glory covers "Tennessee" by Arrested Development.
You need to save your money to buy gas, so pass on the crunk and avoid this at all costs. I wouldn't even bother downloading it for free.
