Mustard Plug
In Black and White
Hopeless CD
I’m not a huge ska fan, but I do enjoy the joyful-sounding beats of the genre. Sure I like to dance as much as the next feller and those catchy upstroke rhythms are hard to pass up. Mustard Plug’s newest release isn’t skatastic, but it does contain some fun tracks to skank to.
The opener “Who Benefits?” is a solid track with tons of brass and a nice catchy chorus. The opening of “Over the Edge” sounds a lot like the driving beat behind Skankin’ Pickles’ “Toothless and Grey” (off one of my favorite ska records Skankin’ Pickle Fever), but it’s a song that will definitely make you move. Unfortunately there are a handful of tracks that slows the momentum down, especially the annoying “Real Rat Bastard” and the monotonous rhythms of “Life is Too Short.”
I think this is one of the first albums in a long time not to feature a mustard character or actual mustard on the cover artwork. A more serious Mustard Plug? Well, the songs are clean and carefully crafted. In Black and White didn’t blow me away and it definitely won’t find its way in constant rotation in my stereo, but it’s nice to hear that fun ska sound again. Die hard fans check it out, everyone else just keep spinning those Skankin’ Pickle records!
