Go It Alone
Histories
Rivalry CD
“Digging up relics of the past / I’m ignoring my own advice: I’m looking back.”*
Along with Betrayed, Go It Alone is one of my newer favorite hardcore groups. Their last full-length, The Only Blood Between Us, got me excited about a straightforward genre that I usually don’t indulge in much. Needless to say I was pretty excited to hear Histories.
Maybe it’s those statically-charged melodic guitar picks that fizzles and resonates, or that Go It Alone writes really solid hardcore songs, the fact is this group is a step above most. Diversity is a key element and Go It Alone clearly embraces this. Strong vocals, powerful driving chord progressions, and an intimidating energy that’s as rigid as petrified wood, this is an outfit you need to get familiar with. Old Dag Nasty fans will be able to pick up on the rich influences as well. Pissed and with a chip on their shoulders, Histories’ assault will make you clench your fists and grit your teeth—the main goal of any fine hardcore release.
Vancouver’s Go It Alone isn’t afraid to slow it down, and slow-dancers like “Weight I,” “Weight II” and “Monastery” will have you grabbing for a dance partner. However it’s the faster more aggressive songs that take full command of Histories. So is this new full-length better than The Only Blood Between Us? Honestly, no. Histories is a really high-energized release that will be spinning nonstop in my stereo this summer, however it didn’t give me aural goose bumps like their last full-length did. Still, Histories is a good dynamic sounding release that all hardcore fans should check out.
