End the Century
Hammer & The Anvil
Self-titled CD EP
The album title says it all. Hammer & The Anvil is one heavy affair.
End the Century's tight chugging metallic hardcore contains undercurrents of melody and some nice deep guttural vocals. Most kiddies with tight beaded necklaces and stovepipe Jnco jeans would have eaten this up without hesitation back in the early to mid 90s (I know I would have), but unfortunately Hammer & The Anvil is nothing new you haven't heard over a decade ago.
The EP doesn't contain anything new, but it is still a good listen. The short, more subdued "Entr' Aote" was a nice surprise, but the one element of Hammer & The Anvil that had me cringing was the singing vocals on "Glass Walls" and "Science In Sleep." They just feel forced and out of place. Overall, End the Century's potent stomping will open up the floor and get the mosh starting in an instant. Not bad, but if your collection is already jammed-pack full of mid-nineties influenced chugging, then Hammer & The Anvil isn't essential. Though I'm sure these young whippersnappers would be fun to see live. It might be time to squeeze back into those Jnco's.
