Cover Your Tracks
Deep Elm CD Compilation

“New school Deep Elm meets old school Deep Elm.”

Anyone who knows me knows I hate covers. I’d rather listen to the original, however it is always interesting to hear a band’s take on a certain song (that’s if they don’t record a complete carbon copy of the original). One release I always enjoyed was the split 7” between The Get Up Kids and Coalesce where they covered each other. Definitely a cool concept, especially between two bands with two completely different sounds.

Cover Your Tracks contains newer Deep Elm bands covering songs by older Deep Elm favorites that have come and gone (except the long running The Appleseed Cast). There is also an original unreleased track by Sounds Like Violence along with a short goofy secret track submitted by a fan about the label: “Oh Deep Elm you’re my favorite label of all time / Every CD you release it truly shines…” I’ll certainly agree with Nathaniel Sutton on that statement.

Alright so who’s covering who? Desert City Soundtrack covers The Appleseed Cast, Small Arms Dealer covers Cross My Heart, Clair De Lune covers Benton Falls, Fightstar covers Last Days of April, Lock and Key covers Brandston, Eleven Minutes Away covers Camber, Free Diamonds covers Muckafurgason, Surrounded covers Starmarket, Dan Phillips of Slowride covers The Appleseed Cast, Burns Out Bright covers Pop Unknown, and Settlefish covers Last Days of April.

“Angel On Hiatus” by Clair De Lune and “Today I Discovered the World” by Small Arms Dealers are definite highlights, but my favorite cover on the release is the gut wrenching rendition of Appleseed Cast’s “Marigold and Patchwork” by Desert City Soundtrack. Good stuff.

Nice concept. Cover Your Tracks definitely gave me the urge to dig out and dust off some old Deep Elm releases…especially Cross My Heart and Camber. Plus there isn’t a weak cover on the compilation. Friends of Deep Elm bands past and present, this is a true gem of a compilation.
