Chiodos
Bone Palace Ballet
Equal Vision CD

I really enjoyed Chiodos’ last release All's Well That Ends Well. So is it surprising that I can’t stand the new highly-acclaimed follow up Bone Palace Ballet? I’m still trying to figure it out.

Trust me I’ve tried really hard to snuggle up to the new sounds of Bone Palace Ballet. Maybe its singer Craig Owen’s crooning vocal delivery or the overabundance of piano and strings or the operatic atmosphere generated throughout Bone Palace Ballet that’s making it hard for me to get comfortable with the new release. Slower tracks like “Lexington (Joey Pea-Pot with a Monkey Face),” “A Letter From Janelle,” and the ballad “Intensity In Ten Cities” had me hitting next without hesitation. The one track that really stood out for me was the highly intense “Teeth the Size of Piano Keys” that reminded me why I fell for the band when All's Well That Ends Well was released. Unfortunately one song isn’t enough for repeat listens of Bone Palace Ballet.

Maybe I miss the edginess of Chiodos’ past material. However hats off to the band for trying something different and for playing a mish-mash of different styles that work for the most part. Maybe the new album is too clean and calculated or the slow piano-led songs just rub me the wrong way, but I’ll keep spinning All's Well That Ends Well over this one.
