Champion / Betrayed
Pilots & Paper Planes
Rivalry Split CD EP

This is a split between two hardcore bands, Champion and Betrayed. These outfits are worth your ear's time, trust me.

Both groups definitely share the same hardcore sound (they share two of the same members), and the difference in sound are subtle, but Betrayed is the hardcore rocker that stood out for me. Why did I gravitate towards Betrayed more? Those damn guitar melodies, especially in "Bring It To Life," where the guitar hooks and textures echo the guitar vibe of Johnny Marr (The Smiths). Yeah, definitely cool cool stuff. This track is worth the price of admission alone. Betrayed is a little more melodic, and a lot more interesting, but both outfits can write some hardnosed songs.

Unfortunately, Champion is no more, but they leave three of their most potent tracks on the split. Fast, forceful, and cutting, the songs barrel ahead—a venomous punk-hardcore attack that doesn't let up for one second. Betrayed's new full-length, Substance, will be released by Equal Vision in mid July. From what the three songs on the split indicate, it will be a record full of substance and exciting hardcore.
