Blue Velvet
Four Songs
Phratry CD EP

I love instrumental music (especially the mastery of the mighty Don Caballero) but Blue Velvet's repetitive rock sadly goes nowhere.

It's hard to believe that there are six members in Blue Velvet (two guitarists, two percussionists, cellist, and a keyboardist)—exciting arrangements by this large collective is hardly ever felt. The songs slowly build, grating guitars and clanging cymbals are dominant and upfront, minimal chords and notes are repetitively played over and over and over again. The problem is that the songs don't have enough time to fully develop.especially with tracks ranging only between two to three minutes long.

Unfortunately, the titles of the first two tracks ("Docile 1" and "Docile 2") perfectly explain Blue Velvet's instrumental rock sound. There are just not enough exciting elements to keep the angular drone on constant spins. Potentially, Blue Velvet have the ability to write all encompassing rock that will distract your mind, especially if they push that sweet cello higher in the mix and stretch those songs to epic lengths, but on Four Songs, there isn't much to hold my interest.
