Black Cat Music
October, November
Lookout! CD
It may take a few spins, but October, November's unvarnished garage meets punk-rock will cause ears to take notice.
Like a boa constrictor, Black Cat Music seems to slowly grip and tighten the listener with each spin of October, November. It definitely isn't an album that strikes immediately, but after a few spins, I was finding myself slowly enjoying and becoming more comfortable with October's scruffiness.
Even though the album contains some dryness and monotony, tracks like "The Jet Trash," and "The Cloud of Glass" are definite highlights on October, along with "Thirteen Foot Waves" that slightly echoes the unhurried rock of The Strokes, along with vocals that sound akin to Julian Casablancas' carefree delivery. There are definitely older influences like Television, Richard Hell, and The Stooges that surface sporadically, but Black Cat Music's music is more restrained and streamlined, and unfortunately, not as risky. Still, Black Cat Music is capable of rockin' out raw, muddy songs that hold your attention; it's just nothing overtly mesmerizing.
The members of Black Cat Music definitely have dirty boots, with various members spending time in varied outfits as Hatebreed, San Geronimo, The Magnetic, The Criminals, and The Receivers, and this maturity shows through on the finely tuned punk-garage numbers. Don't expect to be captivated, just expect to be rocked. The jaunty October, November will please those who love a little retro mixed with their rock, and a little rock mixed with dirt.
