Bayside
Sirens and Condolences
Victory CD
Sirens and Condolences contains a thick and meaty melodic punk rock sound, and the lyrical content has as much gripping bite as the music.
With the master wizardry of J. Robbins behind the recording boards, Bayside nicely weaves thick layers of bass heavy upbeat rock lead by great vocal melodies. I just can't get over how dense Sirens and Condolences feels, but I love it. The vocal deliveries are probably some of the best I've heard in awhile, but sounds can be deceiving, especially when you focus in on the words sung:
"You wanted to know just what makes me tick / I guess I can say that you and your bullshit are pushing me towards an explosion / I guess you're what drives me / I wish I could ride you / I'd drive you too fast into a sharp curve and break your neck like you broke my will."*
Even though, as the first song "Masterpiece" may indicate, Sirens and Condolences isn't a masterpiece, but it's definitely better than most. The album also contains extra nuggets like a behind-the-scenes making of Sirens and Condolences with clips containing Bayside and J. Robbins, and also a rundown of the significance of each song. Sirens is a powerful guitar driven punk rock debut full-length by these Long Islanders that encompass smooth melodies, brooding lyrics, and great vocals. I dig it.
