Banner Pilot
Pass the Poison
Arsenic CD EP
Minnesota’s Banner Pilot fuck it up punk rock!
Yeah, I’m definitely picking up what these guys are throwing down. Raw melodic punk-rock that’s far from insipid or unexciting, Pass the Poison gets the blood flowing with eight upbeat rockers that will make your forehead bead with sweat.
Banner Pilot shares the same energetic delivery as that as contemporaries like Latterman and New Bruises while echoing past outfits like Dillinger Four and early Jawbreaker. Gruff vocals, fist-pumping anthemic choruses, and tight bass-heavy rhythms, Pass the Poison is jam-packed with quick-tempered songs that are vibrantly potent. The opener “Bender” hits hard right off the bat, but the standout that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end is the minute-and-a-half “Wide Awake on Lake St.” Banner Pilot even does a super-charged version of The Buzzcock’s “Ever Fallen in Love.” Yeah, any band that does a cover of The Buzzcocks is a plus.
Pass the Poison is definitely a nice surprise. Banner Pilot’s youthful energy will ignite a flame under old weathered-ears still tightly gripping their worn out Jawbreaker and Crimpshire records along with younger whippersnappers who worship the melodic catchiness of The Lawrence Arms and the aforementioned outfits. Not one weak song, Pass the Poison is worth checking out.
