Atlas Shrugged
Vigilante Songs
Trip Machine Laboratories CD
This release is definitely a nice surprise.
I first got into hardcore back in the mid 90’s (you know, the slow stomping kind of hardcore) and Atlas Shrugged was one of those bands that hit me hard. I first heard their song “Dreamking” on a hardcore compilation a friend made back in high school and needless to say I was immediately hooked.
Vigilante Songs contains three studio recordings, “The Haze Control” which can be found on The Last Season LP, “Rainmaker,” and a cover of Altercation’s “Vigilante Song.” The album also contains eight live tracks, recorded at CBGBs on Mother’s Day in good ol’ ‘97. Vigilante Songs is a true gem because I never had the opportunity to see this band live…so to hear them play with that same intensity found on their recorded material is definitely a pleasure.
A full discography of all Atlas Shrugged’s recorded material would be ideal (which I hear is in the works), but I’ll keep spinning those old vinyl releases. This is a hardcore sound that never gets old. Vigilante Songs sparks a nostalgia for those hardcore days when the music was still exciting and inventive. Heavy yet melodic, Atlas Shrugged played a hardcore sound that was all their own and “Dreamking” still gives me goose bumps even to this day. Hunt down this band’s past recordings, especially the split 7” with New Day Rising. Good stuff.
