As Friends Rust
Won
Doghouse CD

This release far exceeds all preconceived notions I had of the album. Witnessing As Friends Rust live a couple of times and hearing various songs off of compilations and samplers over the years, they didn't capture my attention as much as their Won does.

The songs are enriched with catchy hooks, assertive vocals, and surges of rhythm and harmony. Hardcore tendencies are constantly fighting to surface on a majority of the tracks. Along with Dag Nasty influences embedded within each song, a couple of tracks radiate Samiam, especially on "Perfect Stranglers." Every track is just as enjoyable as the last, but the most memorable tune has to be "Won't Be The First Time." With a pop and fizz of a soda can opening, the song eases into toe-tapping punk rock, insulated with melody and delicate guitar slides.

Damien's insightful lyrics are raw and passionate: "Fuck with the bull, you'll get the horns. Don't lie about the one who could wreck your life with truths," off "Austin We Have A Problem." "Laughing Out Loud" dips into some darker territory: "Sometimes I'd like to know the insides of my wrists. Sometimes I'd like to do what does not happen after this." And the hard-hitting "Morningleaver" will have some guys scratching their heads: "Get to know the day-time me. Do you always have to fucking leave? Get to know the breakfast me. Do you always have to fuck and leave? Woman, are you going home?"

After four years of creating music, breaking up, going through three different line-up changes, and constant touring, As Friends Rust has undeniably won in crafting a tremendous first full-length that displays a refreshing approach to punk rock. Punk rock played with lots of heart and sincerity.
