Huntington Beach's Odd Project
An Interview with Vocalist Matt Lamb
by Fake Train
Odd Project isn't just another metal/hardcore hybrid from Orange County; they're more focused, more ravenous. With capturing a slot on Hellfest this year, and releasing a potent debut full-length, Odd Project are making ears take notice. Vocalist Matt Lamb talks about the new release, along with a bunch of off-the-topic subjects for your reading enjoyment.
Considering it's close to Halloween, what are your top five favorite horror movies? For you, what is it about each film that separates them from others of the same genre?
It's too hard to put just five...I'm a big fan of foreign horror films actually...there's just something way scarier when you can't tell what they're saying. I also like to read, so I'm down with the whole subtitle thing.
Any plans to dress up and rob little kids for bags with the Geto Boys?
[Laughs] Nah. We'll probably just dress up and find some parties, but not until after some good ol' fashion trick or treating of course.
How did you hook up with Indianola for your first full-length? And how has it been working with them?
Indianola actually contacted us first. I guess they saw me in this amateur porn I was in from a while back and became real big fans. Then they found out I was in a band they checked us out. After that it's history baby.
Overall, are you happy with how The Second Hand Stopped turned out? How was the whole experience going into the studio to record your first full-length?
Happy like a bunch of doped up hookers! Overall though, the whole thing was a learning experience. Two weeks definitely wasn't long enough and left us feeling sort of rushed. Zing was amazing however. The engineers, the drinking, the ghosts...good times.
I know Odd Project is looking to add a keyboardist to the group. How do you think the addition will enhance your sound?
Hopefully it'll make us rock even more than we already do! [Laughs] Actually, we've been going to a lot of gay clubs lately...and we've decided we really wanna make something that is Cher worthy.
You guys just played Hellfest [2004] for the first time this year. How was the experience, and how was the crowd reaction like towards Odd Project's set?
Hellfest was incredible in everyway... except the rain the first day. Fuck that.
I read a few interviews that you said you are not really happy with the name Odd Project, but if you had a second chance to rename the outfit, what would the moniker be?
Something simple... I'm a fan of: A Forgotten Dying Buring Dream in the Shadowy Presence of Hopes Fifth Fall towards Black Love in Winter Fear.
What sparked the idea to name the release Second Hand Stopped, and how does the title tie in with the rest of the lyrical content on the release?
The best way I can explain it is that it's the sensation that occurs when one event so phenomenal, good or bad, happens to you and you feel as though time itself actually freezes. I'm sure everyone has felt that way. It makes you feel alive. Hopefully other people can get something out of it too...same with the lyrics. Besides underlying themes of blunts, bitches, and 40s...I like to leave it open to interpretation.
Odd Project's sound definitely contains rich influences from both hardcore and metal, but what would be some records or bands you guys listen to that fans would be surprised to find out about?
Well, I listen to a lot of dancy/rock music and sometimes the occasional Limp Bizkit CD finds its way into my CD player. Not the new shit though, I'm talkin' 3 Dolla Bill$ Ya'll.
I'm curious to know, is everyone in the band registered to vote? What are your feelings about this year's presidential race, and have you already made a decision on which candidate you're going to vote for come November 2nd?
I'm pretty sure we're all anti Bush, that man is an idiot. I hate bands that preach though so I'm just gonna leave it at that.
What are your thoughts on Nader, and his mission to fight the two-party monopoly?
I think of Nader and I think of pot.
Favorite kind of beer?
Bud Light, gotta watch the figure. But if it's a 40oz, King Cobra.
What bands that are no longer together do you regret not being able to see live?
Refused, At the Drive In, The Doors, and definitely 80s Vanilla Ice.
What band or album really sparked your desire to play and create music?
Hmm...two bands mainly: I saw Blink 182 back in 7th grade. Those guys just look like they're having so much fun, and then shortly after I saw a Mötley Crüe video and thought, "I wanna be that fucking cool."
Are there certain films, books, or paintings that have really opened your eyes and inspired you as an individual, and as a musician?
Anything edgy and raw. I love to read, especially stuff that isn't so cookie cutter. I'm not good with names, so any artist or writer or director that can just capture the beauty of life. and I speak on behalf of the band when I say we're all greatly inspired by porn.
What's the near future hold for Odd Project?
Lots of touring, lots of love, and a more rock than one hand can hold.(insert horns here)
Any final words?
If you haven't heard our CD you really are only half living. Really, surgeon general says. So with that in mind go get it and experience a more fulfilling, healthy life. Oh, be on the look out for us on tour this January! Thanks.
