Darkest Hour
Deliver Us
Victory CD
Just when you thought they couldn’t possibly progress any more, bam, Darkest Hour pushes the metal envelope and creates a heavy hitting release that’s hands down the best metal release of 2007 (and I say that with confidence even in July).
Live to thrash.
I was really impressed with Darkest Hour’s last release, Undoing Ruin, where the group shortened the song lengths, shook off tiresome repetitiveness, and threw in a little extra melody, creating a highly intense and enjoyable release. I found Undoing Ruin the most creative and inventive release from the group...until now. They definitely step it up on Deliver Us.
Thrash to live.
John Henry’s voice is more melodic then it’s ever been especially in super dynamic tracks like “A Paradox With Flies” and “Sanctuary.” Yeah, he is singing, but in addition to this softer discharge, Deliver Us finds John pushing his voice to the most guttural of his Darkest Hour career (“An Ethereal Drain” and “Full Imperial Collapse”). The guitar rhythms and riffs couldn’t be any more infectious and cutting. The production crystalline. The songs never get tiresome (they’re like the sweet nectar of Mountain Dew, the more you digest the more you want). Deliver Us is flawless.
As a long time fan, this is hands down my favorite Darkest Hour release to date. I wouldn’t say I’m the hugest metal fan, but Deliver Us is one incredible heavy album. Darkest Hour is one of few bands that seem to progress and push their sound album to album, and Deliver Us might just be their finest moment to date.
